The devastating magnitude-7 event killed more than 200,000 people and caused significant structural damage; concrete homes collapsed within downtown Port-au-Prince and 300,000 buildings were destroyed. Six years later, 60,000 people were still either homeless or residing in camps. The magnitude of the earthquake was such that, according to Haitian Women's Solidarity, the names and exact number of those who were killed is still unknown. Despite this, the work of many volunteers and well-respected charities has enabled progress to be made in the effort to prepare for the next natural disaster.
